IT Wallet and SPID: updates on digital identity
What is the IT Wallet and what is it for?
The IT Wallet is the Italian digital wallet introduced by Decree-Law No. 19 of March 2, 2024, designed as a universal and secure tool accessible directly from a smartphone. Its goal is to streamline and simplify citizens’ digital identity, improving access to documents and public services, and facilitating interaction with public administrations and businesses.
The system is structured around a public digital wallet, integrated into the IO App, and private wallet solutions offered by operators accredited by AgID (the Agency for Digital Italy). Through the IT Wallet, users will be able to store and use official documents in digital format such as a driver’s license, health card, or European Disability Card ensuring security, interoperability, and full legal validity.

How does the IT Wallet work and what can you do with the new digital wallet?
The Public IT Wallet, integrated into the IO App, represents the government version of Italy’s digital wallet. To access it, users must authenticate using SPID or the Electronic Identity Card (CIE). The system functions as a true digital wallet, allowing users to store and present documents and information in the form of electronically validated certificates issued by official sources.
In the initial phase, users will be able to add documents such as the health card, tax code, driver’s license, and the European Disability Card. The IT Wallet uses certified digital credentials, ensuring high security standards. Access to the most common services will be available with security level 2 of SPID and CIE.
Difference between SPID and IT Wallet: what changes for digital identity
SPID (Public Digital Identity System) and CIE (Electronic Identity Card) are the main digital identity tools currently used in Italy to access public and private online services. Unlike these systems, the IT Wallet does not constitute an independent digital identity: it does not directly manage authentication or identification processes with service providers.
To use the IO App, which hosts the Public IT Wallet, users must authenticate via SPID or CIE. In this way, the IT Wallet serves as a complementary extension of existing digital identities, designed for the storage and presentation of verified digital certificates and documents.
Difference between EUDI Wallet and IT Wallet
The EUDI Wallet (European Digital Identity Wallet) is a project promoted by the European Union with the goal of creating a fully interoperable digital identity system recognized across all Member States. It is a common platform that will allow European citizens to authenticate and share digital attributes securely and consistently throughout the EU.
The IT Wallet, on the other hand, is an Italian national initiative that anticipates the European model, initially focusing on the management of digital identities and documents at the domestic level. The system will be progressively updated and aligned with the architecture and standards of the EUDI Wallet, ensuring continuity and compatibility between the two ecosystems.
The two tools are complementary: the IT Wallet operates at the national level, while the EUDI Wallet extends the same functionalities to the European and cross-border context, promoting interoperability and mutual recognition of digital systems. Full integration between the two is expected to begin in 2026.
Yookey IAM: simple integration of SPID and CIE
Yookey is an Identity and Access Management (IAM) system based on processes and technologies that securely manage digital identities and access to resources and services.
In this context, the IT Wallet represents the next evolution of European digital identities: a certified wallet that allows citizens to store and share verified digital attributes and documents.
The integration between the IT Wallet and IAM systems will extend authentication and authorization mechanisms, ensuring greater security, interoperability, and ease of use.
Yookey ID acts as a gateway for authentication via SPID and CIE, enabling public administrations and private companies to easily integrate these digital identity systems into their online services.
